Having taught the virtues of personal responsibility with physical fitness, for over 30 years now, I’m very much aware of the fact that the old argument about nature or nurture applies to physical fitness, in the same way it applies to addiction or behavior.


The question becomes, is your ratio to fit or fat, more a result of your genes or your habits? New science shows that while you can’t change your genes, you can change how they work in your body. And in the case of those that play a role in fat loss, strength training is paramount.


A new study published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology shows that in addition to affecting the genes in your muscles, strength training influences the genes in your fat. After subjecting participants to eight weeks of heavy resistance training, researchers found that the expression of two genes, found in fat tissue, decreased by around 20%. Participants also had a boost in muscle mass and fat burning.


So, what exactly does gene expression mean? Think about how you’d consider the occasion, and the number of guests, when planning the menu for a party. In a similar way, genes pay attention to the type of exercise that you do—and use that information to decide whether your body should burn fat or store it.


Researchers aren’t sure why gene expression would decrease following resistance training, but the results are unmistakable. Strength training definitely encourages the body to use fat as fuel more than cardio alone.
